Athletes Who Develop Bigorexia as a Way to Improve Their Physical Performance

Athletes are expected to show their maximum performance every time they compete. Some of them compete more often than others, that is why some athletes try to find an alternative to improve their performance in a short period of time.

Usually high performance athletes find themselves in the best shape that they can be in, but some of them are still not satisfied. They start by over exercising, this leads the athlete to injuries, so they start using steroids or supplements, that is when the dangerous decisions begin, some cases ending in death.

Believing that anabolic steroids can improve competitiveness and performance, uninformed or misguided athletes, sometimes encouraged by coaches or parents, abuse these drugs to build lean muscle mass, promote aggressiveness, and increase body weight.

Specially in baseball, the doping problem has been growing with famous cases such as Barry Bonds or Sammy Sosa, two of the top ten MLB home run hitters, have hurt the credibility of the entire sport..

Beginning in 1998 with injections in his buttocks of Winstrol, a powerful steroid, Barry Bonds took a wide array of performance-enhancing drugs over at least five seasons in a massive doping regimen.

The past two cases were not fatal, since the both of them are alive, but Ken Caminiti did not have the same fortune. Ken Caminiti was a baseball player for the San Diego Padres. During the 1996 season he won the National League MVP award. Later after his retirement he admitted that during his winning season, he used steroids to maximize his performance.

In a Sports Illustrated cover story in 2002, a year after his retirement, he admitted that he had used steroids during his 1996 MVP season, and for several seasons afterwards.

Two years after this declaration he died from a sudden heart attack, if we can not prove that it was caused by steroids, one of the steroids’ side effects is heart diseases, the steroid abuse increased his probability of dying from a sudden heart attack.

The sudden heart attack death of former baseball star Ken Caminiti, 41, highlights the potential link between substance abuse among pro athletes and its dangerous effects on health, according to experts.

It is true that steroids will result in better performance, than a normal person, in the short term. It is also true that this type of substances will have a negative effect to your body functions, sometimes leading to death.

  1. Sincerely disgust me bigorexia sufferers, that fail to be seen as really are, your body is already deformed and they all continue exercising and taking pills to increase muscle mass, I think if the family really does matter in the bigorexia treatment, because they need to help them overcome their trauma as well as girls with anorexia and bulimia, is always falling and never let them take care of support provided. We also believe that the bigorexia can become an addiction because it feels good as seeing you with your mind body bue is asking for more and more and more and it's never enough. So the addiction becomes bigorexia the need for pleasure that the brain receives to look good and feel that other people look good.

  3. I agree of what cinthia said, bigorexia not only involves the person who is taking anabolics or steroids, the family is involved too, they need to cathalize the problem and search solutions, in this case would be to have a serious conversation with the one who suffers bixoregia, he needs to know all the risks that steroids will bring, the disadvantages at the end, would be major than the results that the athlete is looking for.
Bigorexia its not only for a high perfomance athlete, this problem we can find it too in society.

Bigorexia, as well as Bulimia and anorexia, is a kind of disease which creates an addiction of well-looking. So this illness creates like an image into your brain that shows you what you are not, like to be weak or without a muscle tone. People who suffers of Bigorexia become slaves of a mirror, as they always are measuring the size of their muscles and they may be weighing all day long. In addition to what José Angel has mentioned, Bigorexia causes joint problems by the extra weight the skeleton must support. And everything is compounded if they also take artificial substances such as anabolic steroids and training to improve and accelerate the results of a muscular body. They gain volume, but consumption of these drugs has its risks and these can become fatal.

  5. Bigorexia is a dangerous disease, that is similar to bulimia and anorexia, which both leads to well-looking.
Athletes use asteroids to have a better performance and last longer playing the sport.

These pills produce addiction, but not only the pills, also the way you look, that wants you to take more of these pills.

This causes problems, because even if they have a broken bone or an injury, they want to exercise any ways and causes more problems in the person.

Steroids cause to accelerate the increase of the muscle and the performance, but it is also dangerous to take steroids, because they cause heart attacks.

A characteristic of bigorexic people is that there are always looking at the mirror and measuring their muscle size and measuring their weight.

  6. Basically people who suffer vigorexia, continuously performing exercise routines, without taking care about the harm that this can cause.

I think that this is because we find people who are obsessed with the models on tv and magazines or in other cases some athletes who have the sole goal to become the best in his discipline.

They are recognized among other things, because they can not skip a day at the gym, and they perform exercise in extreme conditions.

I think that this happens in people with low self-esteem and difficulties in interacting with others.

Another thing to consider are the asteroids, it is dangerous to use asteroids as they are addictive and can cause different changes in body and the heart in a bad way.

  7. In addition of Jose Angel’s information, the bigorexia is a distortion of the corporal scheme, sometimes recounted like inverse anorexia nervosa or complex of Adonis and this disease is more common in the men due to the fact that they are mentally prepared in having a marked and strengthened body.

About what cinthia and pinto said, the solution is not only trying to talk with the person that is taking all these anabolic and steroids, they would not make conscience of what they are doing or what consequences can bring to them taking these pills and over exercising. What they need to do is to put these people on special treatments or rehabilitation centers for this disorder.

  8. The espectatives people have in athletes has became bigger and bigger every time. Expecting for this kind of super hereo that has the hability to makes everithing possible without even sweeding an image that massive media has help creating.
With all this preasure over them it isn´t extrange that athletes start to over exercise, having the people happy is never easy.
We should start thinking that part of their problem is our fault (society in general) so the solution maybe in our self.

  9. I think this mental disease is so disturbing, because even when we don't know a lot of people that we may see in the street, in the school, everywhere might have this disease. It is sad seeing those people suffering because they are not conform with their bodies. They want to reach a extremely worked body. But even when they are near the goal, they feel empty. It is just too sad.

  10. I agree with Cinthia Roman, is very depressing to see how these people come to these extremes, because even if they have an exceptional body they have mental problems and self-esteem problems, and affects those around them and like their families and friends.

As Saida said, mass media has a big influence on people, because they show us a defined model of how to be.

My opinion is that the athlete that consumes steroids are not only thinking in improve their sport abilities, they think about what his audience expect of them.
Many of the facts that involves an athlete into steroids is the pressure of the public requiring him to be better competitor and obtain to best possible results. This happen with Barry Bonds , he use steroids to break the Major League career records in home runs . It is difficult for the athlete to decide what is more important if the fame or the health, but most of them take the easy way, that are steroids. I think that the athletes that takes this way are weak, because the can accept that his body has a limit they are just thinking in get stronger or famous. The bigorexia attacks to the weakest people, the ones that are mentally damage thinking only in the vanity and not in the problems that they will have in a future caused by steroids.
